A River Town That Outlasted Its Rival
Osceola wasn't the first town platted along this stretch of the St. Joseph River -- that was Williamsport, laid out in December 1834 and abandoned by 1842. Osceola itself was platted in 1837, named for the Seminole leader, after William and Timothy Moat had already settled the area in 1829, likely arriving by way of the river itself.
Openings Sized for the River-Trade Era
Osceola's Penn Township housing runs from the 19th-century river-trade era, when steamboats connected the town to South Bend and Mishawaka, through later 20th-century infill -- so original window openings in Osceola's older homes often follow the taller, narrower proportions common to that river-town period, a detail worth matching rather than replacing with a standard modern size.
