Why local history matters

South Bend was platted in 1835 along the St. Joseph River's namesake southward bend, following Alexis Coquillard's 1823 trading post and Pierre Navarre's 1820 cabin on the river's north bank. The city incorporated in 1865, and by the century's end its West Washington and Chapin Park districts held some of Indiana's most distinctive residential architecture, including the 1906 DeRhodes House -- a Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Style commission -- and the 1896 Copshaholm mansion built for Studebaker partner Joseph Oliver.

What that means for window replacement today

That layered building history left South Bend with window stock spanning more than a century of styles. Chapin Park's roughly 260 contributing buildings, developed mostly between 1890 and 1910 on the former Horatio Chapin estate, carry Second Empire, Queen Anne, and Gothic Revival openings; later additions platted through the 1920s brought their own sash proportions; and the postwar and modern subdivisions that followed brought yet another generation of window sizing. Matching a replacement to the right opening, for the right era of South Bend home, is the whole job.
