Unincorporated, But Not Undeveloped
Granger never became its own city. What started in 1883 as a train depot -- named for the Grangers, a farmers' fraternal and educational organization -- grew into one of St. Joseph County's largest unincorporated communities, spanning Clay and Harris townships without ever formally incorporating, even as its population passed 30,000 by the 2020 census.
Window Ages Across Two Townships
Granger's unincorporated growth happened in waves that stretch from the 1883 depot era through decades of later subdivision building across Clay and Harris townships, which means window ages and original opening sizes vary block to block far more than in a city with a single platting era -- an older farmhouse near the original depot site can sit blocks from a newer development.
